ἐπειδὴ δὲ καλοὶ κἀγαθοί: with bitter irony. If they were really good, the righteousness of the judgment of Pericles would have been recognized; but if this judgment was unrighteous, then Pericles did not make them good.

ὑπ᾽ αὐτοῦ : γίγνομαι, as passive of ποιῶ, requires ὑπό for the agent.

κλοπὴν αὐτοῦ κτἑ.: in the second year of the Peloponnesian war, when Pericles returned from an expedition against the Spartan coast, the slumbering discontent of the people, caused by the devastation of Attica by the Spartans and the ravages of the plague in Athens, broke out against him in the form of an accusation as a result of which he was fined a sum of money, the amount of which (15, 50, 80 talents) is not certain. Thuc. ii. 59; 65. See on 515 d. That the ostensible charge was embezzlement of the public funds is supported by this passage alone, but that various rumors were current of his dishonesty can be gathered from the story of Alcibiades' advice to him in Plut. Alcib. vii. Περικλεῖ δὲ βουλόμενος ἐντυχεῖν ἐπὶ θύρας ἦλθεν αὐτοῦ. πυθόμενος δὲ μὴ σχολάζειν, ἀλλὰ σκοπεῖν καθ᾽ ἑαυτόν, ὅπως ἀποδώσει λόγον Ἀθηναίοις, ἀπιὼν ὁ Ἀλκιβιάδης: “εἶτα” ἔφη “βέλτιον οὐκ ἦν σκοπεῖν αὐτόν, ὅπως οὐκ ἀποδώσει λόγον Ἀθηναίοις;”

εἰ παραλαβών: not designed as an epexegesis to τοιοῦτος ὤν, which merely gives the general idea which runs through all the preceding thought, but added to give those details to the simile which seem to be requisite.

παραλαβών: receiving for training. See on 483 e. —The position of the words λακτίζοντας, κυρίττοντας, and δάκνοντας is probably merely a chance one.

ἀπέδειξε: the word means “to show or prove as the result of a process,” often in mathematical reasoning; here as the result of training. Cf. below c ἀπέφηνεν. Hence also the expression ἀποδεικνύναι τινὰ στρατηγόν. See on 484 b.
