Socrates accepts tentatively the statement which has been so continually advanced, that ῥητορική is a species of art, in order to proceed with the discussion. The correctness of this statement is brought under question later.

ἀγαθόν γε: the self-satisfaction of Gorgias is so great that he speaks like a Homeric hero. Note the condescension (perhaps unconscious) in the following κάλει δή (you may call me so, then), of which, however, Socrates takes no notice.
