ἆρα μέγιστον: the more usual particle for “whether” is εἰ, but cf. Phaedo 70 d ἴδωμεν ἆρ᾽ οὑτωσὶ γίγνεται ἅπαντα. H. 1016. In the sentence following, we have ἆρα introducing a direct question previously announced by τῇδε as in 459 d.

κολάζεσθαι δικαίως ἀδικοῦντα: the adverb is necessary, because upon it rests the main point in the proof.
