περιέλοιτο: Socrates conceives the difference between prose and poetry to lie simply in the dress, which in the case of poetry surrounds the thought as the shell does the kernel, and is only so far of value.

μέλος: i.e. the musical element, the melody, which is especially prominent in lyric productions.

ῥυθμόν: i.e. the regular movement, at the basis of which lies the μέτρον, syllable and verse measure.

γίγνονται: prove to be.
