τὼ ὁδώ: the fem. dual of the art. does not occur in Attic. See H. 272 a, Meisterhans,^{2} 46, 17 e. ἐπιδιακρίνειν: “to give the final verdict.” The office here assigned to Minos is not the same which Homer (λ 568) makes him fill. Cf. 526 d. περὶ τῆς πορείας: not concerning their course on earth, but as to whether they shall take the road to Tartarus or that to the Isles of the Blessed. Cf. Phaedo 107 d ἐν ἀρχῇ τῆς ἐκεῖσε πορείας.“hic locus est, partis ubi se via findit in ambas:
dextera quae Ditis magni sub moenia tendit,
hac iter Elysium nobis; ac laeva malorum
exercet poenas et ad impia Tartara mittit.
”

ἐν τῷ λειμῶνι: Socrates is thinking of the ‘asphodel meadow’ of Hom. λ 539, 573. According to Homer, it seems to have stretched through the whole of Hades, and to have been the abiding place of the shades. Cf. ω 13 αἶψα δ᾽ ἵκοντο κατ̓ ἀσφοδελὸν λειμῶνα | ἔνθα τε ναίουσι ψυχαί, εἴδωλα καμόντων. Plato places it at the entrance of Hades.
