[291] χεῦαικτερεΐξαιδοῦναιφράζεσθαι are all used with imperatival force. This usage in Homer cannot be interpreted as an ellipse (as in later Gk. “τὸν Πλάτωνα χαίρειν”, sc. “κελεύω”), it is rather directly derived from that sense of ‘purpose’ which belongs to the datival form of the termination of the Infinitive.

σῆμα here will not be a tomb, for the body would not be there, but really a ‘monument.’
