[410] μητρώϊον probably means, not strictly ‘maternal,’ but ‘belonging to the “μήτρωες”,’ the mother's kindred. It is true that “πατρώϊος” in Homer means simply ‘belonging to a father’; but it is not unlikely that it was originally used in a more limited sense, as the adj. of “πάτρως”.
