[206] ἀναγνούσης, gen. as in 24. 345-6 “τοῦ δ᾽ . . . σήματ᾽ ἀναγνόντος κτλ.” Most MSS. have the dat. ἀναγνούσῃ, which is hardly possible after the gen. τῆς. It cannot be justified by the instances of a part. in the gen. following an enclitic pronoun in the dat.: see H.G. § 243, 3, d. It is possible, however, that we should read “τῇ . . . ἀναγνούσῃ” as in 19. 249-250 “τῇ δ᾽ ἔτι μᾶλλον ὑφ᾽ ἵμερον ὦρσε γόοιο, σήματ᾽ ἀναγνούσῃ”, where the dative is necessary for the construction.
