Pal′ette.


1. (Painting.) A thin oval plate of porcelain or other material, having a hole near one edge through which the thumb may be inserted, used by painters in oil for rubbing — up or holding colors.


2. (Metal-working.) The breastplate against which the person leans to furnish a pressure for the hand-drill. Sometimes called a conscience.


3. (Surgical.) a. A light wooden spatula used for percussion, to excite the tone of the skin and tissues.

b. A splint to hold a burnt hand in shape and prevent deformation by the cicatrices.

c. An instrument composed of two perforated plates to catch and withdraw the stylet in operations for fistula lachrymalis.
