Sump.
1. (Mining.) A pit or well in the floor of a mine at the bottom of an engine-shaft, to collect the water, which is pumped from thence. b. A catch-water drain. c. The part of a judd of coal first brought down.
2. (Metallurgy.) A pit of stone at a furnace to collect the metal at its first fusion.
3. (Salt.) A pond of water for salt-works.
