Assaying.) A saucer of refractory clay for containing a charge of lead and the metal to be assayed. It is placed in the muffle of an assayfurnace. Also used in burning off inflammable matters from the sweepings of jeweler's shops, or to obtain the metallic portions from gold-lace, etc.
