Spud.


1. (Husbandry.) A sharp, straight, narrow spade, with a long handle. It is used for digging post-holes, and digging out heavy-rooted weeds, such as burdock, wild parsnip, elecampane, thistles, iron-weed, etc.


2. (Well-boring.) A spade-shaped implement, used in fishing for broken tools in a well.
