[413] ἐπί: const. with “δῦναι”, sc. upon the battle.

ἐπὶκνέφας ἐλθεῖν: cf. 1.475. —The infs. depend on “δός” implied in the invocation, cf. “Γ 351, Ζεῦ πάτερ Αἴαντα λαχεῖν Τυδέος υἱόν Η” 179. The opt. follows in v. 418.—The wish reminds of Joshua's words: ‘Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon; and thou, Moon, in the valley of Ajalon. And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies.’ Joshua x. 12 f.
