[770] ἵπποι: these were immortal steeds, sired by Zephyrus, given by Poseidon to Peleus; cf. 16.148 ff., P 443 f.; 23.276 ff.

φορέεσκον: drew; the Homeric heroes did not ride on horseback. Thus “ἵπποι” often stands for horses and chariots; cf. v. 554, 3.265.
