[415] αἰθαλόεν: the ceiling-timbers were blackened by the smoke from the fires and torches for which no adequate outlet was provided. The same epith. is applied to the ceiling of Odysseus, Od. 22.239.

πρῆσαι: const. with the gen., like the allied “ἐμπλῆσαι”, as “Ι 242, Π” 81.

θύρετρα: the double door which with its decorations formed a principal ornament of the palace, cf. Od. 17.268.
