δημογέροντες: in appos., as elders of the people; title of the nobles as leaders and counsellors, see on 2.21. This epith. is applied to Ilus, son of Dardanus, “Λ 372. — ἐπὶ Σκαιῇσι πύλῃσιν”: i.e. on the tower above the Scaean Gate, from which the Trojan elders and women were wont to watch the battles on the plain; cf. vs. 153, 384, “Ζ 373, 386, 431, Π 700, Φ 526, Χ” 447, 462 f., 24.735; cf. also illum ex moenibus hosticis | matrona bellantis tyranni | prospiciens et adulta virgo Hor. Carm. iii. 2. 6 ff., spectaverant enim e moenibus Pergami non viri modo sed feminae etiam Livy xxxvii. 20.
