Strictly used of the smaller circular shields (“ἀσπίδας εὐκύκλους Ε” 453), in distinction from the large oval “σάκος”. But the shield of Paris is called “σάκος” v. 335, and “ἀσπίς”, v. 356; and thus also the shield of Achilles is “ἀσπίς, Σ” 458, and “σάκος Σ” 478.
