Pis′ton–rod Pack′ing.

A material or device around the piston-rod to prevent leakage of steam from the cylinder.

In the example, the packing is pinched between the conical gland d and the perforated collar c, through which steam is admitted to the packing.

In Fig. 3765, the strands of hemp are wound on wire, and form annular sections or a coil around the piston-rod in the stuffing-box.
