Tail-screw.
(Lathe.) The screw which advances or retracts the back center. In the commoner description of lathes the back center is at the end of the tail-screw, but in superior lathes the center is formed on a plug fitted in the end of a plunger, which is simply advanced and retracted in the barrel of the tail-stock by the rotation of the screw. The back center is held to its adjustment by the setscrew above.
