Tur′key-red.

The brilliant color known by this name is produced by a series of processes differing slightly at different places, but not essentially varying from the following French method: —

The cloth is steeped in an oily liquid; then allowed to ferment or sweat for several hours, and exposed to the heat in a hot closet for several hours longer; these processes are three times repeated, after which the cloth is steeped in an alkaline liquid, and then in a solution of alum and galls, next in limewater, then boiled in a solution of madder, washed and dried, again steeped in alum and galls, and boiled with madder; after three successive boilings with soap, pearlash, and other ingredients, it is exposed to the air for some time, and finally boiled with water and bran and then dried.
