Shear′ing.
1. The cutting of metallic plates and bars. See shears.
2. (Mining.) The making of vertical cuts at the ends of a portion of an undercut seam of coal, serv- [2135] ing to destroy the continuity of the strata and facilitate the breaking down of the mass. The undercutting is called holing.
