1. (Locomotive.) Guard-plates placed over the wheels of locomotives to prevent any person coming in contact with them, and also to protect the machinery from wet and dirt projected by the wheels when running.


2. (Vehicle.) a. A guard over a wheel, to keep dirt from reaching the occupants of the carriage.

b. A guard near the door, to keep the dress from rubbing against the wheel in entering or alighting.
