Tweed.

Fabric.) A light, twilled woolen fabric for men's wear, with an unfinished surface. Two colors are generally combined in the same yarn. The best is made all of wool, but in inferior kinds shoddy and cotton are also introduced.

The name is said to have originated in a mistake in spelling; the word tweed having been substituted for tweel in an invoice, the consignee took advantage of the fact to put forth the goods as a new kind of fabric.
