Trac′tion-wheel.

A wheel employed in drawing or impelling a vehicle, as the driving-wheel of a locomotive or tractionen-gine. The power is applied to the wheel, and the frictional adhesion of the rotating-wheel on the rail or ground is the immediate cause of progression.
