Plank-road.

A road of transverse planking or puncheons laid on longitudinal sleepers or stringpieces. A plank-way.

One mode of forming such a road is as follows: Two ditches are dug 16 feet a part, the earth being thrown on to the included strip. One half of the track is left as an earthen surface sloping toward the ditch on that side, the other is planked. Imbedded in the ground are laid longitudinal sleepers, 4 1/2 feet apart. Each sleeper is from 12 to 20 feet long, 12 inches broad, and 4 inches deep. The sleepers are supported at the joints by scantling beneath. The planks are 8 feet long and 3 inches thick.
