[*] 682. The same principle applies when a secondary tense of the indicative without ἄν in the construction of 415 is quoted. E.g. (Ἔλεγεν) ὅτι κρεῖττον ἦν αὐτῷ τότε ἀποθανεῖν, “he said that he had better have died at once.” LYS. x. 25. (The direct discourse was κρεῖττον ἦν μοι ἀποθανεῖν.)
