The genitive depends on the meaning of a compound verb as a whole (1) if the simple verb takes the genitive without a preposition, as ὑπείκειν withdraw, παραλύ_ειν release, παραχωρεῖν surrender (1392), ἐφί_εσθαι desire (1349); or (2) if the compound has acquired through the preposition a signification different from that of the simple verb with the preposition: thus ““ἀπογνόντες τῆς ἐλευθερία_ςdespairing of freedomL. 2.46 cannot be expressed by γνόντες ἀπὸ τῆς ἐλευθερία_ς. But it is often difficult to determine whether the genitive depends on the compound verb as a whole or on the preposition contained in it.
