εἶπεν: “suggested.”

δῆλον, ἔφη, ὅτι: i.e. δῆλόν ἐστι, ἔφη, ὅτι. The condensed form δῆλον ὅτι, manifestly, occurs just below. With both forms, sc. θετέον ἐστίν.

τὸ κακουργεῖν (sc. ποτέρωσε θῶμεν): doing mischief. Note the increasing brevity of questions and answers.
