[204] ἑλιξάμενος, ‘with a swing of his body,’ whirling himself round to throw the more violently. Others take it to mean ‘swinging the head’ in a circle; cf. “ἐπιδινήσας,” 3.378. On account of the “Ϝ” of “Ϝελίσσειν” Heyne reads “σφαιρηδὸν δέ μιν ἧκε”, comparing for the place of the adv. “βοτρυδὸν δὲ πέτονται,” 2.89. Bentley conj. “σφαιρίνδα”, Bekker “σφαιρηδά” (suggested also by Heyne) on the insufficient analogy of “ἀποσταδά,” Od. 6.143, and other adverbs in -“δά”, which are all derived from verbs, not from nouns.
