[453] The ‘bowdlerizing’ of this passage by the insertion of “οὐ” (see above) is amusing; compare 13.658. The patron of the emendation, Aristodemos of Nysa, was tutor to Pompey's sons, and in his old age lectured the young Strabo. He had, however, more than one predecessor in the whitewashing of Phoinix, who was made out to be innocent by Euripides (see the fragments of his “Φοῖνιξ”). ὀϊσθείς, suspecting, 1.561.
