[455] τηλόσε: the use of the terminus ad quem instead of a quo is frequent in cases like this; the reaching to a distance is regarded as a property of the power of hearing, not of the sound, 16.515 “δύνασαι δὲ σὺ πάντοσ᾽ ἀκούειν”, cf. 11.21 “πεύθετο γὰρ Κύπρονδε μέγα κλέος”. Of course the converse is common too, 9.572 “ἔκλυεν ἐξ Ἐρέβεσφιν,” 11.603 “κλισίηθεν ἀκούσας”.
