[743] The synizesis in εὐεργέος is very doubtful in so ancient a passage. Various conjectures have been proposed; Christ's “εὐϝρεγέος” with the metathesis which we find in “ῥέζω” = “Ϝρέγjω” is ingenious. He also suggests “εὐπλεκέος”, van L. “εὖ Ϝερκτοῦ”, Nauck “ἐυξέστου”, Menrad “εὐέργου” (“εὔεργος” in pass. sense is found in Herod. and Theokr.; “εὐεργός” in act. in Hom. Od.).
