[570] δὲ σπόμενος, MSS. “δ᾽ ἑσπόμενος”: see note on 5.423. “ περί ” goes closely with “σπόμενος”, taking the place of the usual “ἅμα” with “ἕπεσθαι”, lit. attached to the spear round about. But the phrase is properly used of a spear when pulled out of a wound; and for ἤσπαιρ᾽ we should have expected “ἤρυγεν” as in 20.404 (Pallis).
