Hard though it is to believe that the words mean the hollow of the shield, it must be admitted that it is equally hard to understand the words “διὰ δ᾽ ἔντερα χαλκὸς ἤφυσε” if the body was covered by a cuirass: see Schol. T quoted on 17.314.
