[519] τερσ῀ηναι, a pass. form, like “τερσήμεναι,Od. 6.98, as if from “ἐτέρσην”, an aor. of “τέρσομαι”, not occurring elsewhere; and not to be confused with the trans. “τερσαίνω”, which is found in H. only in 529. βαρύθει here only; intrans. like “<*>νύθω” (see 392), “φθινύθω”, etc. αὐτοῦ is another instance of the weak anaphoric use of the pronoun. The variant “ὕπερθεν” is perhaps preferable; cf. 11.421 and the common phrase “πόδας καὶ χεῖρας ὕπερθεν”.
