[408] νόσφιν, in secret; cf. 16.36-37, and for other warnings from Thetis see 9.410, 18.9 ff. But the idea of a continued prophetical communication from her is peculiar to this place. In fact the prophecy as to the death of P. in 18.9 would rather tend to increase than to allay his anxiety here, and indeed almost directly contradicts 410-11. The discrepancy of course arises from difference of authorship, and we need not try to remove it by excision of lines. Compare the similar difficulty in the note on 9.411.
