[10] For εἵαθ᾽, a form which recurs some fifteen times in H., Ar. strangely read “εἴαθ᾽”, as though = “ἦσαν”, as also in 24.84, Od. 20.106. In the last passage there is more excuse for him, as the verb is there applied to an inanimate object. ἄσθματι, cf. 241. ἀπινύσσων, dazed, “ἀντὶ τοῦ παραφρονῶν καὶ ἀναισθητῶν: πινυτὸν γὰρ τὸ αἰσθητικόν”, Schol. BL. The verb recurs only Od. 5.342, Od. 6.258, in the sense to be foolish; see note on 14.249. The variant “κῆρα πινύσσων” was explained to mean expecting death.
