551.Εὐρώπη”:

ORATORES ATTICI. The rule is always followed as, e.g. ISOC.4.68:καθ᾽ ὃν” (sc. “χρόνον”) “ἑκάτεροι τῆς Εὐρώπης ἐπῆρχον”. 117. 187. Elsew.

PLATO , Alc. II, 141 B: “πάσης Εὐρώπης” (exceptional). Criti.112E (enumeration, see 550). Gorg. 523 E (see 550). 524 A (see 550). Menex. 239 D (see 550). Tim. 24 E (enumeration, see 550). 25 B: “Λιβύης” (no article) “μὲν ἦρχον μέχρι πρὸς Αἴγυπτον, τῆς δὲ Εὐρώπης μέχρι Τυρρηνίας”.

XEN. The only exception to the rule is An. 7.8, [25]: “τῶν ἐν Εὐρώπῃ Θρᾳκῶν” (Kallenberg, l.c., p. 525), and this passage is spurious. “Εὐρώπη” is not nearly so common as “Ἀσία”, occurring only four times (see Keller's index) in the Hellenica, viz., 3.2.9. 4.2.6. 3.15. 8.5.

THUC.1.89.2:ἐπειδὴ Μῆδοι ἀνεχώρησαν ἐκ τῆς Εὐρώπης”. 2.97.5. 6. All three exx. follow the rule.

In 2.26 and 2.33, all Mss., and in 4.49 ABC, omit the article in the phrase “διὰ πάσης τῆς Εὐρώπης”. In 3.115: “τὰ ἐπέκεινα τῆς Εὐρώ-” “πης”, only R has the article. In all the passages the article should be read unless, as is likely, “διὰ πάσης Εὐρώπης” in 2.33 is to be bracketed. For the omission of the article in 2.16. 4.42. 198, see 4.45: “ἐς τὴν γῆν ταύτην ἥτις νῦν ὑπὸ Ἑλλήνων Εὐρώπη” (predicate) “καλέεται”. Elsewhere with the article: 1.4 (twice). 103. 209 (twice). 2.26 (part. gen.). 33 (twice). 103. 3.96. 115. 116. 4.36. 42. 45 (twice). 49 (twice). 89. 143. 5.1. 12. 6.33. 7.5. 8 (twice). 9. 10. 20. 33. 50. 56. 126. 148. 174. 185. 8.51. 97. 108 (ter). 109. 9.14 (part. gen.).
