ἰὼ ξένοι, ‘extra metrum,’ as 736 “ἰὼ θεοί”, O. T. 1468ἴθ̓, ὦναξ”, etc. Here “ἰώ” is a cry of surprise. In O. C. 822ἰὼ ξένοι” (within the verse) is a despairing appeal (‘Alas, friends...’).
