ἐξήκους᾿, as if by rumour from a far-off place: cp. Aesch. Eum. 397πρόσωθεν ἐξήκουσα κληδόνος βοήν”. Above, in 378 and 472, this compound was merely a strengthened “ἀκούω”.

ὄπωπα δ᾽ οὐ μάλα. Cp. Hieron 1. 12 “οἱ δὲ τύραννοι οὐ μάλα” (nequaquam) “ἀμφὶ θεωρίας ἔχουσιν”. The emphasis contrasts the sufferings known only by hearsay with those which have just been so vividly placed before their eyes.
