πρόρριζος here= “πανώλεθρος”, as in Ar. Ran. 587“πρόρριζος αὐτός, ἡ γυνή, τὰ παιδία”, | “κάκιστ᾽ ἀπολοίμην”. It would strain the word to understand, ‘torn from his place’ in the chariot. ἐκριφθείς. In Her. 6. 86“ἐκτέτριπται...πρόρριζος” is said of a man whose family is exterminated (cp. Eur. Hipp. 684); but “ἐκτριφθείς” is manifestly unsuitable here.
