μάτην, falsely: 63 n.—The conjecture μὴ for τῇ would mean, ‘as if the calamity were not a fiction’; but the vulgate is manifestly better. εὐτυχησωμεν is strictly the ‘ingressive’ aorist, ‘when we shall have become prosperous.’
