ᾗ, causal: cp. 160 n. πρῶτα μὲν … εἶτα … ἔπειτα (266). The influence of the relat. pronoun ᾗ is confined to the first clause, as in O. C. 632 ff.: “ὅτῳ πρῶτον μὲν...ἔπειτα δ᾽ ἱκέτης κ.τ.λ.” τὰ μητρὸς is not a mere synonym for “ἡ μήτηρ”, but rather denotes her mother's relations with her: O. C. 268“τὰ μητρὸς καὶ πατρός. ” ἔχθιστα συμβέβηκεν, have come to be such. This verb, though often joined with the participles of “εἰμί” and “γίγνομαι”, is rarely construed with a simple adj.: cp. however Plat. Rep. 329D “νεότης χαλεπὴ τῷ τοιούτῳ ξυμβαίνει”.
