φερέγγυος, ‘able to give security,’ and so ‘competent’ for a purpose, stands with a gen. only here, the usual constr. being the inf. (as Aesch. Eum. 87); but Thuc. 8. 68 has “πρὸς τὰ δεινὰ...φερεγγυώτατος”. Cp. Anthol. Pal. 10. 56. 11 “σωφροσύνης τρόπος οὗτος ἐχέγγυος”.
