δεινὸν, a mysterious power, a strangely potent tie; cp. Aesch. P. V. 39“τὸ συγγενές τοι δεινὸν ἥ θ᾽ ὁμιλία”: Aesch. Theb. 1031“δεινὸν τὸ κοινὸν σπλάγχνον”: Soph. Ph. 355“δεινὸν γυναιξὶν αἱ δἰ ὠδίνων γοναί”.— Isaiah xlix. 15 ‘Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb?’ πάσχοντι: for the masc., cp. 145 n.— ὧν τέκῃ, without “ἄν” ( O. T. 1231 n.). The v.l. “τέκοι” is possible ( Ant. 666 n.), but less natural.
