γὰρ, prefacing the statement ( O. T.277 n.). ἀποτρύειν, ‘fret away.’ The midd. occurs in Ant.339“γᾶν...ἀποτρύεται”. (Cp. Tac. Hist. 2. 76 “si quid... ferociae habuit,...commissationibus deteritur.”） ἐλπίδα τὰν ἀγαθὰν, that brighter forecast which the case permits: cp. Ai.606“κακὰν ἐλπίδ᾽ ἔχων”.
