ἢ ζῶντ᾽ … ἢ τεθνηκότ̓: a way of saying, ‘I cannot tell whether his life will last so long.’ The change to “ζῶντ᾽ ἔτ᾽ ὄψεσθ̓” would weaken the verse.—Cp. 235.
