ἄρθρον ᾗ λυγίζεται, ‘where the joint is supple,’ i.e., at the ankle (“σφυρόν”), where the ball of the joint (“ἀστράγαλος”) plays in its socket. This mode of definition is Homeric: cp. Il.5. 305“ἔνθα τε μηρὸς” | “ἰσχίῳ ἐνστρέφεται” (turns in the hip-joint).
