ἐφέστιον, added to ἐς δόμους, marks how the hospitality of the hearth had been violated. Cp. Eur. Med.713“δέξαι δὲ χώρᾳ καὶ δόμοις ἐφέστιον”. The stranger who had been received as an inmate was under the protection of “Ζεύς”, both “Ξένιος” and “Ἐφέστιος” ( Soph. Ai.492). For the phrase ἐλθόντ᾽ … ἐφέστιον, cp. Hom. Od.23. 55“ἦλθε μὲν αὐτὸς ζωὸς ἐφέστιος”.
