κῆρυξ ἀπ᾽ οἴκων … οἰκεῖος: ‘his own’ herald, returning from Trachis, was not one at whose hand he could have expected such a gift. It is needless to give οἰκεῖος a special sense, as (a) ‘bred up in his household,’ or (b) ‘sent on a private mission,’ as Paley takes it.
